Google Chrome 1.0 windows version is now available for download

Submitted by Technology News & Review on Friday, 12 December 2008One Comment

Google Chrome is available for download on Windows in a final version 1.0.

Google chrome will be one of the few products stamped Google has not experienced an almost endless beta phase of development. As planned and announced recently by Marissa Mayer, the browser-based open source project Chronium is now available in a version 1.0.

The time of the “big test users’ can start to the browser that aims to find its place in a very competitive industry dominated by Internet Explorer (70%) and Firefox continues to do its hole (20%).

Despite a global market share of less than 1% during the beta test (in November) – and this is already higher than that attributed to Opera – for more than ten million active users claimed, enthusiasm is rigor on the side of Google where we welcomed the work done in just 100 days have seen a succession of 14 updates before arriving at this version 1.0.154.36.

Chrome features have already been mentioned in our columns (see our test beta) and if Google had decided to change the course of the final version is mainly due to improvements in stability and Security, parts of Chrome running in a sandbox to protect the computer from malware. Improvements should also be measured in terms of support for online video.

If Google can seduce Chrome is also and especially for its speed and we are promised even more speed since the beta via JavaScript V8 engine, 1.4 times faster than its debut on the benchmark and SunSpider 1.5 times the benchmark V8. Remember that the Web page rendering engine is vested in WebKit which is fine day Safari from Apple. Note however that still fails Chrome Acid3 test, posting a score of 78/100.

This final version also provides greater ease in the import / export bookmarks, and more control regarding the management of navigation data while the navigation is still closed to date.

Despite this final version of Google’s own admission, still a long way to go. We ignore the lack of a devolved into Mac OS X and GNU / Linux to point the finger at the still unsupported RSS feeds already adopted by virtually all modern browsers. The good news is that a platform is developing extensions.
